Catching Dusk
Catching Dusk is a research project with the University for the Creative Arts, about the mood of dusk at the Badewiese Sonnplatz, St. Gilgen, Austria.
And it needs your help.
The project aims to document locations in a new way. Not through maps or facts, but through how those places make us feel. To truly know a place you must experience its unique atmosphere or mood. London feels very different to Vienna for example, but you can't sense that through maps or facts.
By documenting the atmospheric-mood of locations this research hopes to raise awareness of how atmospheres affect us, how they are created, how to preserve them or not be manipulated by them.
To begin, this project is documenting the atmospheric mood of one small location, the Sonnplatz in St. Gilgen Austria, at one particularly atmospheric time, that of dusk.
Why here? St.Gilgen is famed for its beauty, dramatic geology and cultural heritage all of which is well documented. But what draws people back here is the atmospheric mood. This has never been studied... until now.
Get Involved
Take a seat on the bench in the Sonnplatz at dusk. Dusk begins as soon as the sun has dropped below the horizon. It is the time after sunset and before night.
Sit there quietly, throughout the duration of dusk, this can take up to two hours so make sure you keep warm. During this time, watch, feel, hear, smell and sense your surroundings, soak in the atmospheric mood of dusk.
Notice what elements of the location are affecting the mood? How does the water affect the colour of dusk? What sounds are present and how do they affect the mood? How does the light play off the surroundings, and how does that affect the mood?
Take a photo of the view of dusk, send it to us using the form below, with the date and a few comments about what you experienced and how the location played a role.
Your photo may be published on our Instagram site, used as part of our research into atmospheres of locations and act to document this location in a new way; through its atmospheric mood of dusk.
Want to do more? You are welcome to submit a poem or artwork in response to your experience of dusk.
Thank you for getting involved!
